CELEBRITY INTERVIEW WITH JUDY TORRES
- How did you find your passion?
I found my passion one day while watching television. I was about 10 years old. It was a talent show of sorts, and a woman was singing. I immediately was drawn to her voice and the emotions she was showing, and it gave me chills. I then noticed that the people were completely quiet; that she had their complete attention. And when she was done, the crowd jumped up and applauded. I thought to myself, ‘wow, that is powerful; to be able to capture people and make them feel overwhelmed with emotion. I want to do THAT!’
- When did you get your first “big break”?
If finally got my first “break”, when I appeared on a gong show at a local nightclub called, Sidestreets, in the Bronx. I almost got gonged by a judge, because I wanted to make people laugh so I sang badly on purpose, like Edith Bunker from the show All in the Family. That same judge, George Vascones, approached me and asked if he could manage me. I told him I had no money and he in turn told me that he had no experience. So we agreed, 6 months we’d try it out, and if he didn’t get me a paid show within that time I could walk away. About 6 months later I was doing cover songs of Whitney Houston, when we agreed I needed original material. I was introduced to a friend of his, Mickey Garcia, and I auditioned for him, and was given a song called, “No Reason to Cry.” Almost a year later that song was my first song to get airplay on the radio!! And that was followed by another single, 2 albums and lots of songs afterward!
- What is Judy Torres doing these days? I’ve heard you on Cubby & Carolina in the Morning Show on 103.5 KTU. You sound great! I listen to you every morning on my drive to work. So tell our readers a little bit more. You do Zumba? You continue to tour and sing?
Twenty-nine years later, I still perform just about every weekend at concert venues, nightclubs, traveling all over and selling out!! In addition to that, I am celebrating 17 years with WKTU on Sundays from 3-8pm, and for the past 5 weeks now, I’ve been covering for Carolina Bermudez on the Cubby & Carolina in the Mornings – Monday through Friday 6-10am.
I also am featured as leads in two independent films coming this fall, “Eli Moran” and “Fists of Love,” which also stars Frankie G, of Power and Frances Lozada! Lastly, I go to different gyms to teach Zumba as a guest instructor. At the end of the day, I am a married woman, a stepmom to a lovely 9 year old daughter, who wants to love people, and leave them feeling happier than they did before they came across my path!!
- I’m new to Free Style music. I want to download Judy Torres songs on my iPod. What are your favorite songs that all of us should have?
If you are new to Freestyle, and want to download some “basic” freestyle, you should download the following:
Please Don’t Go by Nayobe (first freestyle song), Cover Girls “Show Me’, Noel, Silent Morning, Maria by TKA, Bad of the Heart by George Lamond, Crying Over You by Soave, Boy I’ve Been Told by Sa-Fire, Where Are You Tonight by Coro. There are just TOO many great ones to mention, but that should get you started lol.
- What does the future hold for Judy Torres? Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I have no idea what the future holds for me that remains a mystery for which I am very excited. I like to live by many mottos and one of them is “The BEST is yet to come!” You see, I know that God has a greater plan for my life than I could ever imagine, so it’s exciting! I’ve had so many great things happen for me that I surrender to the not knowing part. But I am aware that we cannot walk blindly through life, so I do have a few goals: I want to pursue being on Broadway in a musical – that’s always been a secret desire of mine. I also want to pursue being on television – either on a talk show or in a dramatic series. That would be so much fun! But we shall see!!
- You’re a Step-mom, a Wife, An awesome freestyle singer, a radio personality. How do you find balance?
I’m still working on finding the proper balance, and I thank God for all the women in my life who are mothers, including my own mom, for encouraging me and giving me great advice. Preparing ahead is a HUGE help: making meals in advance, routines are important to children, and SLEEP is necessary. LOL. I am especially learning that I am incapable of helping others if I am not helping myself. Again, I’m still learning, instant motherhood is a work in progress, but I think we are all very happy & God never gives us anything we cannot handle. Yes, my faith helps me BEST!!!!

8. What’s your advice? Or your Inspirational message?
My inspirational message is a lot, lol, but it’s basically this: You are here on this earth for a purpose, you were perfectly made. Your job is to find out what that purpose is, and throughout this journey of life we must treat others with love, compassion, understanding, forgiveness and service. We need to pay it forward – be kind to those who need it, even strangers, because you never know what that person is going through! And be a blessing and the rest will be AMAZING!
